Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Fleshy herbs.

Stems: Stems brownish purple, ascending to erect from a short repent base, 10–20 cm long, 2–3 mm in diameter toward base, usually branched, internodes 2–5 cm long, densely strigillose on upper parts, older stems glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled 3–5(–9) per node. Blades oblong–spatulate to obovate, 1.2–2 cm long, 0.4–1 cm wide. Apex rounded. Base narrowly cuneate. Surfaces hirtellous or Upper surfaces sometimes glabrate; dark green or reddish green with pale green veins, producing a mottled appearance, thin and fleshy, drying chartaceous. Margins entire. Only midrib conspicuous or leaves inconspicuously palmately 3-veined. Petioles 0.3–0.5 cm long, somewhat appressed hirtellous to glabrate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in spikes solitary, terminal, 4–6(–10) cm long, the rachis ca. 0.5–1 mm in diameter, glabrous, flowers moderately to loosely congested, peduncles slender, (2.5–)3–5 cm long, but at least some of them more than 3 cm long, strigillose to glabrate. Flowers bisexual (perfect), perianth absent. Each flower subtended by a peltate bract. Calyx (sepals) absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2. Ovary superior, broadly ovoid, 1-carpellate, 1-celled, apex oblique; ovules 1 per cell, orthotropous, erect; stigmas 1–4, subterminal.

Fruit: Fruit broadly ovoid; ca. 0.8 mm long; papillose–viscid with sessile glands. Seeds 1 per fruit; with scanty endosperm and copious; starchy perisperm.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Mesic valleys.

Elevation Range: 40–600 m.
